Lawrence J. O'Donnell’s story is one of dedication, sacrifice, and love for his family and community. Born on March 21, 1960, he grew up in Lindenhurst, where he became an active and well-regarded member of his community. Attending Lindenhurst High School, Larry participated in both wrestling and football, building a foundation of discipline and teamwork that would serve him throughout his life.
After graduating in 1978, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country with honor until his discharge in 1982. He returned to Lindenhurst, where he married his high school sweetheart, Ellen Clemens, in 1986. Together, they raised their three children—Kate, Kristen, and Terrence—in the same tight-knit community that Larry had grown up in. Larry’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he actively participated in their extracurricular activities, always ensuring he was present for every important moment in their lives.
Larry also served his community as a dedicated firefighter. He spent 17 years with the Fire Department of New York and several years with the Lindenhurst Fire Department. Unfortunately, due to multiple injuries sustained on the job, he was forced into retirement, an event Larry described as one of the saddest moments of his life. Regardless of the physical toll, his commitment to serving others never wavered.
Perhaps one of the most defining moments of Larry’s life came on September 11, 2001. Although being off duty, he reported to Ground Zero, joining countless other first responders in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Larry worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center recovery site, known as “the pile,” in the days, weeks and months that followed. Unfortunately, the toxic air and unsafe conditions led to Larry developing long-term illnesses related to his exposure to the wreckage and dust at Ground Zero. His health was forever impacted by those efforts, but he always viewed his service during that time as a duty to his country and his fellow citizens.
Larry's legacy is defined by courage, sacrifice, strength and a deep love for his family and community. He will forever be remembered for his selflessness and unwavering commitment to others, especially in the face of adversity.
