My Personal Connection to FDNY Capt. Billy Burke, Jr.

Each year since 2015, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has held the Tunnel to Towers Tower Climb at One World Trade Center in New York City in honor of FDNY Captain Billy Burke, Jr.  One thousand participants climb 104 stories to The Observatory, symbolizing strength, hope and the resiliency of the American spirit. The event celebrates the life and sacrifice of all 9/11 heroes, including FDNY firefighters Stephen Siller and Captain William F. Burke, Jr.

This event has come to be particularly important to me over the years, due to my personal connection to the Burke Family. My mom married Chris Burke, one of the six Burke siblings, in 2021. On their very first date she noticed a significant ring he was wearing. Chris explained that ring was specially made and given to him by his brother Billy's New York City Fire Company, Engine 21, to honor and commemorate his brother's heroic sacrifice on September 11, 2001. He then began to tell my mom the story of Billy's valiant efforts, as he tried to save a quadriplegic man and his aide, who were trapped on the 27th floor of the North Tower. While hastily trying to find a solution to evacuate them, the South Tower suddenly collapsed. Billy immediately alerted the Captain of Ladder Co. 6 and the Officer of Ladder Co. 24, who were also in the North Tower, of the collapse. They, along with their men, urgently evacuated with a number of civilians they were assisting, all eventually making it to safety. Minutes later, the North Tower also collapsed and Billy perished along with Ed Beyea and Abe Zelmanowitz. Billy had selflessly been repeating, “keep going, I’m right behind you,” to keep his men moving towards safety knowing he had no intention of abandoning Ed and Abe in that perilous moment. As fate would have it many years later on that first date, my mother then told Chris that she in fact knew the man, Ed Beyea, that Billy had given his life for trying to save.

Since then, I have come to know Chris and the rest of the Burke family well. They embody a profound sense of friendliness, kindness, generosity, and duty, all while keeping a wonderful sense of humor. They have been dedicated to continuing their brother's legacy by advocating for the families of first responders affected by the tragic events of 9/11, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. They honor Billy’s courage and selflessness, by supporting organizations like the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Their efforts not only preserve his memory but also provide much-needed assistance and hope to the countless others that were affected on 9/11, reflecting the enduring resilience that defines their family.

As someone who deeply values the camaraderie fostered through competitive sports, where pushing your limits is underpinned by the unwavering support of a team, I see the Tower Climb as a powerful tribute to the courageous acts of the first responders who gave their lives that day. Billy's decision to put the lives of his fellow firefighters and the civilians he pledged to protect, before himself, is a rare and inspiring example of sacrificing for the greater good. His actions inspire me to strive for the same dedication and bravery, illustrating the profound impact that selflessness and courage can have on the world.

It is truly an honor to participate in this event alongside the Burkes in memory of their brother. Any donation to the event and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation would mean a great deal to both of our families. This organization consistently receives top ratings for financial health and efficiency, ensuring that the majority of donated funds directly support its programs. Thank you for considering supporting a cause that honors the bravery and sacrifice of those who served selflessly. Your contribution helps sustain the legacy of these heroes, inspiring future generations and supporting first responders, veterans, and their families who are impacted by tragedies and the risks they take to protect others.
